Rivers Assembly denies receiving police invitation – Punch Newspapers

Friday Amobi, Port Harcourt

THE Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani, on Thursday dismissed the claim that the state legislature had received a letter from the State Police Command requesting the release of a member of the House for interrogation on a matter relating to cultism.

Ibani, who spoke in Port Harcourt, said the police should follow the right channel to get the release of the lawmaker, whose name was not mentioned for questioning.

A suspected 24-year-old kidnapper and cultist, Justice Oti, popularly called ‘High Tension,’ had allegedly named a lawmaker in the State House of Assembly as a member of his cult gang when he was paraded by the police.

A police source hinted our reporter that the State Police Command had written the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani, to release the lawmaker for interview by the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, headed by Mr. Akin Fakorede.

In a letter dated October 9, 2017, obtained through a source close to Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Zaki, the Command indicated that it was investigating cases of kidnapping and murder in Ahoada East Local Government involving Oti and members of his gang and urged the Assembly to release the lawmaker mentioned.

Reacting on Thursday, Igbani said, “It is the standard norm that if any member of the Rivers State House of Assembly is wanted or needed by any security agency for interview for whatsoever reason, the agency responsible will write through the DO, who is a security personnel resident here, who will now inform the Speaker that a member is needed for interrogation by the police, DSS or any other security agency,

“But as I speak, there is no letter from the Police High Command or any Divisional Police Headquarters in the state demanding the release of any of the member of the House for questioning.”
